Motörhead — Aftershock: Motörhead's Aftershock Roars On Vinyl

Motörhead's Aftershock Roars On Vinyl — the Vault Deep Dive on Motörhead — Aftershock (2013).

The Story

By 2013, Motörhead had spent nearly four decades as the loudest working band in rock, and Aftershock arrived as their twenty-first studio album. Lemmy Kilmister was in his late sixties, wrestling with health scares that had already forced show cancellations, yet the trio kept writing and recording as if nothing had changed. The record landed on the band's own UDR imprint, a home that gave them full creative reign in their later years. It is not a swan-song statement or a reinvention. It is Motörhead being Motörhead, loud and unrepentant, with the three-piece lineup that carried the band through its final stretch.

The Sound

Aftershock leans on Motörhead's core strength: uptempo rockers built on Lemmy's overdriven bass and Phil Campbell's guitar, with Mikkey Dee driving from behind the kit. But the album breathes wider than the band's reputation suggests. There are slower, bluesier passages and swaggering mid-tempo grooves alongside the flat-out chargers, giving the record a range that surprised listeners expecting only speed. Lemmy's vocal is worn and lived-in, the gravel unmistakable. The production is dry and direct, favoring punch over polish, letting the trio sound like a room full of amplifiers rather than a studio construction. It is honest, muscular, and unmistakably theirs.

The Sessions

The album was produced by Cameron Webb, a longtime collaborator who had worked with the band across several of their later records and understood how to capture the trio live and loud. The recording kept faith with Motörhead's method: three players committing performances rather than layering endless overdubs. That approach preserves the ragged energy that made the band a legendary live force. Lemmy's health troubles hovered over the period, but the sessions produced a full-length that stands confidently alongside the band's stronger late-career work, delivered without compromise and without softening the edges that defined them from the beginning.

The Legacy

Aftershock is the penultimate Motörhead studio album, followed only by Bad Magic in 2015 before Lemmy's death that December. That timing gives it weight: it captures a band still swinging hard in its twilight, refusing to coast. For collectors, it belongs to the tight run of final recordings that document the classic three-piece at the end of the road. Why this copy: it is a Picture Disc pressing on UDR, sealed and mint. The picture-disc format makes it a display piece as much as a listening one, and a sealed example preserves the artwork intact for the serious shelf.
