The Greatest Marketing Story Motown Ever Told — the Vault Deep Dive on The Jackson 5 — Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5 / ABC (1969).
The Story
In December 1969 Motown introduced America to five brothers from Gary, Indiana with an album title that told a beautiful lie: Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5. Ross hadn't discovered them — but as an origin story it was irresistible, and the music underneath needed no embellishment whatsoever: an eleven-year-old lead singer with instincts no child should have, fronting the tightest family act ever put on a record. Months later came ABC, the follow-up that proved lightning could strike the same place twice. This disc carries both albums, complete, on one early Motown CD.

The Sound
The debut swings between bubblegum soul perfection and surprisingly grown material — Motown testing exactly what its youngest stars could carry. The breakout single is a masterclass in pop construction, every hook stacked on top of another hook, and young Michael attacks it like a twenty-year veteran. ABC doubles down: brighter, bouncier, built around a pair of singles that both went all the way to the top of the charts. Together the two albums are the purest distillation of the Motown machine's late golden age — pure joy, engineered to the decimal point.
The Sessions
The hits were written and produced by a Motown brain trust billed only as The Corporation — a deliberately anonymous credit, because after losing his star songwriting team in a legal fight, the label's founder wanted no more famous names to negotiate with. The brothers cut their vocals in Los Angeles as Motown began its shift west from Detroit, drilled relentlessly until the harmonies snapped tight. The real story of who found the group — a Motown singer who brought them in and produced their earliest sides — stayed out of the liner notes entirely.
The Legacy
The debut's breakout single became the group's first number one and one of the most beloved singles Motown ever released; the follow-up's pair of chart-toppers made the Jackson 5 a phenomenon with an unbroken opening string of number ones. Every pop boy band since lives downstream of these two records — the harmonies, the choreography, the kid out front. And the eleven-year-old at the center of it all grew into the biggest star of the twentieth century.
Why This Copy
This is Motown's 1986 two-on-one CD pairing the complete debut with the complete ABC — an early digital-era pressing from the label's first push onto compact disc, manufactured by DADC. The two-fer configuration went out of print decades ago, and early Motown CD pressings have quietly become their own collecting lane. Ours is clean throughout.
