About the album
Produced by Don Van Vliet's high school friend Frank Zappa and released on Straight Records in 1969, Trout Mask Replica is widely regarded as the masterpiece of Captain Beefheart's career and has a reputation as one of the most challenging recordings in the 20th century musical canon. The band rehearsed for eight months in a small rented house in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, then recorded all the instrumental tracks in a single six-hour session, with the vocals added over the next few days. The music combines elements of R&B, garage rock and blues with free jazz and avant-garde composition, including polyrhythm and polytonality. It sold poorly on release in the United States and failed to chart there, but it has since been widely regarded as an important influence on many subsequent artists.
