About the album
Carly Simon's 1971 self-titled debut announced a distinctive singer-songwriter with literary instincts and a conversational delivery. Produced by Eddie Kramer, it set her introspective lyricism against tasteful, understated arrangements. The standout is "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be," co-written with Jacob Brackman, a somber ballad about a woman pondering marriage that became her first Top 10 hit and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance; the album itself won Simon the Grammy for Best New Artist at the same ceremony.
