About the album
Toy was recorded in New York in the second half of 2000, after Bowie ended his Mini Tour with a Glastonbury Festival performance in June, and it re-recorded songs he had first cut between 1964 and 1971 alongside a couple of new tracks. He cut it quickly with his touring band, chasing a live, spontaneous feel. EMI/Virgin shelved the album and asked for new material instead, and Bowie went on to begin work on Heathen. It stayed in the vaults for two decades, with some tracks surfacing as B-sides, before a full official release. Reworkings of early numbers like 'Conversation Piece' and 'The London Boys' give rare insight into where he began, revisited by a seasoned artist.
