About the album
Deep Purple's 1968 debut, Shades of Deep Purple, captures the Mark I lineup: Rod Evans on vocals, Nick Simper on bass, alongside Jon Lord, Ian Paice and Ritchie Blackmore. The record pairs four originals with four thoroughly rearranged covers, most famously "Hush," written by Joe South, which reached number 4 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and brought the band considerable attention. A fascinating document of a group before it fully became itself.
