About the album
Released in 1971, Tarkus was the second studio album by Emerson, Lake & Palmer, following their debut. The twenty-minute title suite that fills side one is the centerpiece, a seven-part conceptual piece built around Keith Emerson's organ and Moog, Greg Lake's measured vocals, and Carl Palmer's relentless drumming. Side two gathers shorter, looser pieces like "Bitches Crystal" and "A Time and a Place." It went to number one on the UK Albums Chart, the only ELP album to do so, and is now considered a quintessential progressive rock album.
