About the album

Released in June 1974, From the Mars Hotel was the last Grateful Dead album before the band's hiatus from live touring that began in October 1974, and it was made while they were testing their massive touring P.A. system, the Wall of Sound. It's a tight, well-crafted set by their sprawling standards. "U.S. Blues" stayed in live rotation throughout the band's existence and was a preferred encore, while "Scarlet Begonias" became an extended-jam highlight, later usually paired with a segue into "Fire on the Mountain." Phil Lesh wrote and sang "Unbroken Chain" with poet Bobby Petersen; Deadhead lore held that it would only be played at the band's final concert, and it was finally broken out in March 1995. A rewarding entry point into the band's studio work.
