About the album

Released in 1986, Control followed Janet Jackson's decision to sever business ties with her father and manager Joseph and the rest of the Jackson family, and critics have praised it as a personal statement of self-actualization. She recorded it with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis at Flyte Tyme in Minneapolis, taking co-writing and co-production credits on a sound that fused rhythm and blues, funk, disco and synthesized percussion. The album topped the Billboard 200, and singles including "Nasty," "What Have You Done for Me Lately," "When I Think of You" and the title track all peaked in the top five of the Billboard Hot 100. Its triplet swing beat is a precursor to new jack swing, and the record established Jackson, Jam and Lewis as leading innovators of contemporary R&B.
