About the album
Pearl was the final album made with Janis Joplin's direct participation, her only record with the Full Tilt Boogie Band, released in January 1971, three months after her death. Producer Paul A. Rothchild and her new backing musicians gave it a more polished sound than her records with Big Brother and the Holding Company and the Kozmic Blues Band, crafting an album that showcases her extraordinary vocal talents. It topped the charts and carried the Kris Kristofferson-penned "Me and Bobby McGee," along with "Cry Baby," "Get It While You Can," and the a cappella "Mercedes Benz." The instrumental "Buried Alive in the Blues" stands as the vocal she never lived to cut.
