About the album

Released in February 1967, Surrealistic Pillow was the first Jefferson Airplane album with Grace Slick, who joined the band in October 1966 after her time in The Great Society. It's the record that pushed San Francisco's psychedelic scene into the national conversation, blending folk-rock roots with something stranger and more expansive. "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit" became the enduring hits, but the quieter moments, like Marty Balin's "Today," hold up just as well. Jerry Garcia is credited as "musical and spiritual advisor," with guitar credits on "Today" and a few other tracks, though producer Rick Jarrard denied his presence on several of them. It is considered one of the most influential and quintessential works of the early psychedelic rock era.
