Collector Notes: Jimmy Smith turned the Hammond B-3 into a front-line jazz voice at Blue Note in the late 1950s, then moved to Verve in 1962, where Creed Taylor put him in front of big bands and made him a crossover star. Under all of it he was a blues player to the core, and this set gathers his bluest Verve sides with George Benson, Stanley Turrentine, Kenny Burrell and Oliver Nelson along for the ride: Hobo Flats, I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man, T-Bone Steak, Trouble In Mind, The Sermon and Grabbin' Hold. The fold-out booklet carries a full liner essay, behind a cover collaged from vintage baseball cards. Disc is in Excellent Plus condition. Back insert is clean and sharp. The booklet shows a small black ink scribble on the front side, and a few dents along the sides from the plastic holders.
