About the album
Kansas arrived in 1974 with a self-titled debut, the first studio album from the American progressive rock band. Cut for Don Kirshner's label, its material was written mostly by Kerry Livgren and Steve Walsh, with Walsh on keyboards and vocals and Robby Steinhardt on violin and vocals. "Can I Tell You" was one of two singles pulled from the album, while "Journey from Mariabronn" was inspired by Hermann Hesse's Narcissus and Goldmund. It peaked at #174 on the Billboard album chart, but the platinum success of Leftoverture (1976) and Point of Know Return (1977) revived interest in the band's early albums, and Kansas was eventually certified Gold in 1995.
