About the album
Death Magnetic, released in 2008 and produced by Rick Rubin, followed St. Anger (2003) and was the first Metallica album to feature bassist Robert Trujillo. Musically it is a departure from St. Anger and is considered a return to the band's thrash metal roots, with more complex compositions and long guitar solos from Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield. Tracks like "The Day That Never Comes," "All Nightmare Long," and the instrumental "Suicide & Redemption" anchor the record. It made Metallica the first band to achieve five consecutive number-one studio albums on the U.S. Billboard 200, and critics reviewed it positively as a return to form, though the production was criticized as overcompressed.
