About the album
Released in 1996, Load was a stylistic departure for Metallica, arriving after their 1991 self-titled album, a major commercial success. At 78 minutes and 59 seconds it is their longest studio album, and it moves away from their thrash metal roots toward a hard rock sound with blues rock and Southern rock influences. The band also adopted a new image with short hair, and the cover art is by Andres Serrano. Four singles were released, "Until It Sleeps," "Hero of the Day," "Mama Said" and "King Nothing," and the album topped the charts in over 15 countries. The new look and change in sound were criticized by many fans before release, though the album was a commercial success.
