About the album
Released in 1972, Harvest became the best-selling album of Neil Young's career. Recorded in 1971 at sessions in Nashville, London and California, it pairs the Nashville band Young dubbed the Stray Gators with orchestral arrangements recorded in London with the London Symphony Orchestra. "Heart of Gold" gave him his only number-one hit in the United States, and the album also holds "Old Man," "The Needle and the Damage Done" and "Out on the Weekend." The album's success caught Young off guard and his first instinct was to back away from stardom, but it has remained his signature album.
