About the album

A Sun That Never Sets, released in 2001, followed the band's previous two albums, Through Silver in Blood and Times of Grace. It finds the Oakland band leaning further into atmosphere and restraint, trading some of the sheer density for space, melody and genuinely quiet passages. Steve Albini engineered the sessions, and the results feel both earthen and expansive. Tracks like "From the Hill" and "Falling Unknown" show a group comfortable letting a song breathe before it crushes. It began a shift toward slower tempos and a more contemplative sound that the band carried through the rest of their discography up to An Undying Love for a Burning World.
