About the album
Recorded at Stax in Memphis in two sessions on July 9 and 10, 1965 (apart from one track), Otis Blue has been regarded by critics as Redding's best work. Backed by Booker T. & the M.G.'s and a horn section drawn from the Mar-Keys and the Memphis Horns, he works mostly through covers, with three Redding originals and three songs by Sam Cooke, who had died the previous December. It includes "I've Been Loving You Too Long," an energetic version of Sam Cooke's "Change Gonna Come," and a take on the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction." The sound of Southern soul reaching its full expressive power.
