About the album

Steely Dan's third studio album, released in February 1974, found Becker and Fagen writing shorter, more concise songs than on Countdown to Ecstasy while enlisting prominent Los Angeles studio musicians to record numerous overdubs. It was the last album the group made and released while still an active touring band, and the last to feature the full quintet lineup, though the five band members had reduced roles next to the studio players. "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" became their biggest hit, built on a bass pattern from Horace Silver's "Song for My Father", while "Night by Night" brings in funk and the title track a shuffle, two styles the band hadn't tried before.
