About the album

Sting's debut solo studio album, released in 1985, saw him turn away from synth-driven, electrofunk sessions toward more jazz-oriented music. He assembled a band of young jazz players—Branford Marsalis, Kenny Kirkland, Darryl Jones and Omar Hakim—which gave the record a loose, improvisational feel while keeping his songwriting front and center. "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free," "Fortress Around Your Heart" and "Russians" became the touchstones, the last drawing on Prokofiev amid Cold War anxieties. It earned several Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year.
