About the album

Named for the pink house in West Saugerties, New York where the album's music was partly composed, Music from Big Pink was The Band's 1968 debut album, following their stint backing Bob Dylan. It blends country, rock, folk, classical, R&B, blues and soul, with a laid-back feel and Garth Hudson's organ among its instruments. "The Weight" peaked at No. 63 on Billboard's Hot 100 in 1968 and gained widespread popularity from the Band's performance of it at Woodstock in 1969; Bob Dylan wrote one and co-wrote two of the album's songs. The cover was intended to set the group apart from the psychedelic culture of 1968, and music academic Chris Smith said its songs laid the groundwork for roots rock.
