About the album

Released in November 1995 as the first of four albums in The Beatles Anthology series tied to the televised special, Anthology 1 gathers material from the Quarrymen days through 1964. It leans on outtakes, demos, live cuts and alternate takes, offering a window into how familiar songs came together in the studio. "Free as a Bird" was the flash-point of the set: Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr reworked a John Lennon demo recording, with Jeff Lynne producing. It is also of historical interest as the only official release of performances with Pete Best and Stuart Sutcliffe in the band.
