About the album
Released in December 1967, Axis: Bold as Love was the Experience's second album, arriving only seven months after Are You Experienced. It finds Hendrix working with producer Chas Chandler and engineer Eddie Kramer, leaning into stereo panning, phasing and gentler textures alongside the fireworks. "Little Wing" and "Spanish Castle Magic" are Hendrix compositions that draw on his rhythm and blues roots and stayed in his live repertoire throughout his career, with "If 6 Was 9" and "Castles Made of Sand" rounding out a varied set. A transitional record that still rewards close listening.
