About the album
Released in late 1967, the Experience's second album arrived just months after their debut, and it shows a band stretching beyond raw blues-rock into something more textured. Working again with engineer Eddie Kramer, Hendrix experimented with stereo panning on the opening "EXP," and the coda of the closing "Bold as Love" features the first recording of stereo phasing. The album includes "Spanish Castle Magic" and "Little Wing," both of which stayed in Hendrix's live repertoire throughout his career, along with "If 6 Was 9." Some critics have found it the least memorable of the Experience's three studio albums, yet it is also praised as a showcase of Hendrix's gifts as a songwriter, with a "lighter, looser and more melodic" feel than its predecessor.
