About the album
The Police's 1978 debut announced a trio capable of folding punk energy, reggae lilt and pop craft into something lean and original. Recorded on a budget of £1,500 at Surrey Sound Studios, in an intermittent fashion over six months, it carries the raw immediacy of a group with little to lose. "Roxanne" became the calling card, though "Can't Stand Losing You" and "So Lonely" prove the album's depth. Sting's writing, Stewart Copeland's propulsive drumming and Andy Summers' guitar textures were already in place. A sharp, unfussy opening statement.
