About the album
Released in 1969, Tommy was the fourth studio album by the Who, written primarily by Pete Townshend. The double album tells the story of the fictional Tommy Walker, who becomes deaf, dumb and blind to the outside world, with songs written mostly by Townshend and arrangements that came from the whole band. "Pinball Wizard," "I'm Free" and "See Me, Feel Me" were all released as singles, with "Pinball Wizard" reaching the top five in the UK and the top 20 in the US. It was later developed into other media, including a 1975 film directed by Ken Russell and a 1992 Broadway musical, and the live performances of Tommy in 1969 and 1970 revitalised the band's career.
