About the album

Released in 1976, Small Change is a heavily jazz-influenced record, with Tom Waits on vocals and piano and Lew Tabackin on tenor saxophone. Critics gave it generally favorable to highly positive reviews, and it outsold his previous albums. "Tom Traubert's Blues" opens the album, its refrain based almost word for word on "Waltzing Matilda," and "The Piano Has Been Drinking" and the title track are here too. A portrait of last-call America, delivered in that unmistakable gravel-and-whiskey voice.
